The Youth Sports and Recreation Commission, in collaboration with the Detroit Recreation Department, is hosting a Youth Baseball Fun Day on Thursday, August 7, 2003, to kick off the ninth annual Hometown World Series Baseball Tournament. The Fun Day Celebration and Tournament Series will be held at the Jayne Field Complex, Charles Street just east of Conant Avenue in Detroit. The Hometown World Series is co-sponsored by WB-Channel 20, the Detroit Tigers and the Youth Sports Coalition. Admission is free.
The purpose of this post-season baseball tournament, which runs August 7th through 10th, is to showcase the talent of youth players, in an atmosphere of sportsmanship, teamwork and positive reinforcement. Players will compete in five age divisions, with the top two teams in each division competing in a double elimination championship. The winning team in each division will receive tickets and formal recognition at the August 20th Detroit Tigers-Texas Rangers game at Comerica Park.
