The New York Sports Clubs
The New York Red Bulls were the worst team in MLS in 2009. However, things turned around dramatically last season as the Red Bulls won the MLS Eastern Conference Regular Season championship. In 2011, the Red Bulls hope to continue their winning ways.
The Red Bulls Lost Talent From 2010
The Red Bulls have lost much talent from their 2010 squad. Perhaps the biggest loss is the departure of captain Juan Pablo Angel, who had made 102 appearances for the Red Bulls since 2007. Angel left New York to play on the other coast for the Los Angeles Galaxy. French international superstar Thierry Henry will replace Angel as captain in 2010.
The Red Bulls also lost three-time MLS All-Star defender Mike Petke and midfielder Seth Stammler, who had played for the Red Bulls since 2004, to retirement following the 2010 season. Petke has re-joined the Red Bulls as an assistant coach. Defender Jeremy Hall, who started nine matches for the Red Bulls in 2010 was traded to the expansion Portland Timbers. Defender/midfielder Luke Sassano, who had significant playing time for the Red Bulls in 2008 and 2009 was lost to Sporting Kansas City. Midfielder Siniša Ubiparipovic was not brought back to the club.
