So, let’s forget about the fact that arithmetic begins with an A, writing begins with a W and generally ignore the majority of these old government phrases and focus on the reading part. Reading, in its original form, has been on the decline in popularity for a long time. Modern children growing up have more technology, flashing lights and TV screens than they know what to do with, and this has led to other pastimes overhauling the space that books used to occupy.
E-books, on the other hand, are becoming more popular as the design of the 'reader' itself becomes slicker, however, the internet (more specifically Google, in most cases) has replaced reference books and sifting through dark libraries for finding the answer to life’s questions, and Wikipedia has a page on everyone and everything.
Despite this, schools (especially primary schools) still set aside time for reading and, to a large extent, follow a curriculum where the books get more complex and in-depth the older and more functionally intelligent the children become.
