The New York Palace

The New York Palace in the VIIth District of Budapest, along the grand boulevard of Erzsébet Körút, was commissioned by the New York Life Insurance Company as their Hungarian head office. Hauszmann Alajos with the collaboration of Korb Flóris and Giegl Alajos designed the magnificent building, which was completed in October 1894. The jewel in the crown of the New York Palace was reputedly the most beautiful café in the world, the New York Café..

The New York Palace was built in an eclectic renaissance style. The sumptuous marble interiors were draped in silk and velvet, creating a picture of extraordinary grandeur that was compared to the palace of Louis II, King of Bavaria. A fountain at the entrance greeted guests, while Venetian chandeliers mesmerised visitors. Bronze statues and gilded columns harmonised with the majestic ceiling murals by Mannheimer Gusztáv and Eisenhut Ferenc.
