Canada Customs Passport Office
The Excise Tax Act authorizes Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers to charge and collect the goods and services tax (GST) on items imported into Canada. While there are exceptions including prescription drugs, medical devices and precious metals, many imported goods are subject to the dreaded GST.
What some importers do not realize is that GST also applies to tariff duties and not just to the value of an import shipment. So while GST may be listed as 5%, the percentage actually charged on an import shipment is often higher.
Case Study for Calculating GST on Imported Goods
Consider a sample shipment of waterproof rubber sports shoes imported into Canada from China. The exporter’s commercial invoice charges in Chinese currency; the invoiced amount is 6.4 million Yuan. This amount excludes shipping and insurance charges, since customs duties and taxes do not apply to those costs.
