In 2002, Kahne got his first taste of NASCAR, running 20 races for Robert Yates Racing in the Nationwide Series. After racing for Akins Motorsports in 2003 in the Nationwide Series, Kahne was signed by Evernham Motorsports to replace veteran driver and 1988 Cup Series champ Bill Elliott in the #9 Dodge.
